Janet Bristol

November 20, 1923 — July 17, 2013

Janet Nancy Bristol, age 89, formerly of Saranac Lake died peacefully Wednesday, July 17, 2013 with family and her new friends at the Van Renesseler Manor in Troy, NY. Janet had moved to Troy in 2012 to live with Laurie and her family, prior to moving to the Manor.

Born in Brasher Falls, New York on November 20, 1923, she was the daughter of William and Jennie (Clark) Butler. Janet married Ralph Bristol June 29, 1943 in Syracuse, New York. He predeceased her on December 1, 1998. Her beloved brother, Donald Clarke Butler of Utah predeceased her February 24, 2013.

Janet worked in Reynolds Metals, tri-cities Alabama in 1943 - 1944. She later moved to Syracuse, NY and then to Saranac Lake in 1946. She enjoyed traveling, particularly in the Western States, visiting her brother and his wife in Salt Lake City, UT. She helped her husband open the Adirondack Gem and Rock Shop in Saranac Lake in 1961 and operated it until 2009. She was an avid reader, a Girl Scout leader in the 1960's and active in the First Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake. Janet collected gems and minerals and welcomed many people to visit the Gem and Rock shop. She was blessed with many dear friends in Saranac Lake and she loved to share her many stories of all the good times she spent with them laughing, dancing, joking and card playing for a nickel.

She is survived by three daughters Nancy Bristol of Watervliet, NY, Kathleen Bristol of Keene Valley, NY and Laurie Harper of Troy, NY and one son-in-law Kevin Harper of Troy, NY, five grandchildren Jason Bristol, Danielle O'Rourke and Stephen, Derrick and Diahann Harper, six great grandchildren Cheyne Bristol , Devon Bristol , Alaia Harper, Quincy Harper, Hudson Bristol and Declan O'Rourke .

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday July22 at the First Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake with Rev. Joanne White officiating. Burial will follow in Harrietstown Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
