Ethel Anderson Bower, 79, of Tupper Lake, NY and formerly of Suffern, NY died suddenly in the company of her family August 15, 2011.

Born in Tupper Lake on April 12, 1932, she was the daughter of Fred “Andy” and Shirley Ingraham Anderson. Mrs. Bower was a graduate of Tupper Lake High School, class of 1950 and SUNY at Oswego, class of 1954 where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

She was a longtime resident of Suffern, NY, teaching in the Spring Valley school system 4 years and later as a substitute teacher in the Ramapo Central school district for 24 years until she and her husband Richard Bower, retired to Tupper Lake in 1993.

Ethel was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She volunteered regularly at the Wild Center, the Rod and Gun Club, Hospice, Mercy Care Center and the Adult Center. Her passion was her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing organ and piano as well as singing in church and ecumenical choirs. Her hobbies included knitting, hiking, cooking and traveling.

Ethel is predeceased by her mother and father Shirley and Fred Anderson, brothers Fred, Jim and Harold Anderson and by her grandson Kevin Bower. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Richard Bower Sr., children Richard Jr. and wife Elizabeth Bower, Stephen and wife Karen Bower, David and wife Kristin Bower, Nancy and husband Rich Francis; grandchildren Megan and husband Pastor Jason D. Wood, Brendan, Timothy, Matthew, Colin, Stephanie, Casey, Kyle and Brian Bower, and Rachel Francis; two brothers George Anderson, Earl and wife Barrie Anderson.

Calling hours are scheduled for Thursday August 18th from 2:00 to 4:00pm and from 7:00 to 9:00pm at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home in Tupper Lake. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 19th at the United Community Church. Burial will follow in Lakeview cemetery and a luncheon reception at The White Birch Café.
