Robert E. Boon, age 61, of 657 State Route 3, Saranac Lake, died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at his home following a short illness.

Born in Saranac Lake, New York on April 26, 1947 he was the son of Herbert and Lina (Marzano) Boon.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Vietnam Era and was awarded the Purple Heart.

"Boon" had owned, operated and worked as an independent truck driver for many years. He was an active member of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department since 1965 where he served as Past Rescue Chief: he was a member of the Plumber/Steam Fitters Union: the Veteran of Foreign Wars Association; American Legion: Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association; and the Moose Lodge. He was an avid NASCAR fan and Mustang enthusiast.

He is survived by his life partner Martha Montagnola, his mother Lina Boon of Bloomingdale, NY; three sons Patrick of Loudon, NH; David of Carry, NC and Jonathan of Seattle, WA; one daughter Monica Yeardon of Oswego, NY; one brother Michael Boon of Saranac Lake, NY; one sister Linda Sawyer of Oswego, NY, and 8 Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Herbert Boon.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Sunday, December 14, 2008 from 1:00 PM -4:00 PM. A Fireman’s Prayer Service will take place at 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon immediately followed by a Veterans Prayer Service. A funeral service will take place at 4:15 PM on Sunday at the Fortune - Keough Funeral Home, Inc, with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Following cremation burial will take place at St. Paul's Cemetery in Bloomingdale, NY.
