TUPPER LAKE – James M. Bombard, 63, of Tupper Lake, died May 23, 2009 at home, surrounded by family and close friends, after courageously battling a long-term illness.
Born Dec. 16, 1945, he was the son of Alfred Bombard and Rita (Frechette) Peets. He graduated from Holy Ghost Academy as the valedictorian and president of the class of 1963. He also attended St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and the Eymard Prep Seminary in Hyde Park.
From an early age, Jim worked alongside his father doing masonry. He went on to work for the U.S. Post Office and Sunmount. He eventually came to build his own businesses, Bombard and Boudreau and Caretaker Enterprises as a contractor. One of his biggest accomplishments as a lifelong mason was building the castle on Old Wawbeek Road in Tupper Lake.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968 and was stationed in Gross-Sachsenheim, Germany for 15 months.
Jim was a loving father and husband and enjoyed traveling with his wife Susan and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Tupper Lake; daughters: Brittany Bombard and her fiancé Eric Proulx of Tupper Lake; Tiffany Kentile of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gabrielle Bombard and her boyfriend Michael Oakes of Atlanta, Ga. and Jami Bombard of Port Orchard, Wash.; step-son Kirk Roberts and his wife Kristi of Glens Falls; brother Joe Bombard of Tupper Lake; sisters: Janet Roberts and her husband Wayne of Tupper Lake and Jeanne Crubaugh and her husband Rodger of Haines City, Fla.; step-father Donald Peets of Winter Haven, Fla.; nieces and nephews: Michael Roberts and his wife Ellie of Plattsburgh, Keegan, Kollin, Kiarra and Kaylee Bombard; uncle Francis Bombard; several cousins; and close friends Guy Hurteau, Donna Poirier and Cindy Powers, all of Tupper Lake.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Jim’s family will hold a memorial service at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will be held after the gathering at 11 a.m. A graveside service will follow in the Holy Name Cemetery in Tupper Lake. His family will welcome friends to remember Jim at 1 p.m. at the VFW on Park Street in Tupper Lake. The Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake is in charge of arrangements.
Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society care of Hope Lodge in Burlington, Vt. or High Peaks Hospice, in care of the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake.
