Delmar James Berghorn, age 95, of 152 Broadway, Saranac Lake, died Monday, October 20, 2008 at his home in Saranac Lake.
Born in Akron, New York on November 27, 1912, he was the son of Charles and Ella (Burnett) Berghorn. He married Emma Law on October 9, 1980 in Saranac Lake.
Del worked at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake for ten years in central supply. Prior to that he owned and operated Berghorn's Music Shop in Saranac Lake for two years and was a member of a drum and bugle band. He worked for ORDA at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex as an elevator operator for ten years, retiring in 1988. Del loved ballroom music and played in a band years ago, performing at the Wawbeek, the Tic Tock and other locations. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also was a renowned story-teller and was once featured on Adelphia Cable's Public access channel 2. He was a member of the Thousand Islands and the Malone Oriental Temple of the Shrine and the Lake Placid Masonic Lodge # 834 F&AM. He is a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He was a past member of the Akron Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Emma of Saranac Lake, three sons Charles Berghorn and his wife Kathy of Lake Placid, NY, Philip Berghorn and his wife Betty of Tioga Center, NY, Darryl Berghorn and his wife Leslie of Laguna Nigel, CA, one daughter JoAnne Bickford and her husband Tom of Tupper Lake, NY; ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his niece Evie Stapleton. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, three brothers and two sisters.
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A Masonic Service will take place at 7:45 PM Wednesday evening immediately followed by a Veterans Service. A funeral service will take place at 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home, with Rev. Robert Lawthers officiating. A graveside service will take place at 10:30 AM in North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid on Thursday October 23. Family and friends are invited to participate in a funeral procession to the cemetery which will depart from the funeral home at 10:00 AM. Thursday morning.
