A. James Allott (Jim)
Born October 8, 1935 in Newburgh, N.Y., passed away at the Adirondack Medical Center on May 11th at the age of 75.
Jim moved to Elizabethtown in 1970, married his sweetheart Patricia Woods in 1981, and moved to Saranac Lake in 2001. Jim graduated from Northwood School in 1953 and attended Middlebury College. He would proudly announce, if asked, that his Dudley Camper No. was #27073.
Jim is survived by his wife Patricia, his children, Stacey and husband Jay Annis of Saranac Lake, Jeffrey and wife Susie Allott of Elizabethtown, Jim and wife Kathy Allott of Potsdam. Jim is also survived by six grandchildren: Kevin, Baylee, Sam, Zachary, Nathan and Sage, and his beloved Newfie Jack.
Jim was a Boy Scout troop leader for ten years. He was an American Red Cross Instructor for CPR, First Responder, Wilderness First Aid, and EMT. He was also a member of the North Elba Republican Committee. He was an adjunct instructor for North Country Community College and Skidmore College for Mountaineering and Canoeing. Most recently he enjoyed being a parishioner at the Church of St. Luke’s.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman, environmentalist, skier, sailor and paddler. He was a torch bearer for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and was an active member of the National Ski Patrol for 50 years. He was passionate about alpine skiing and served on several ski patrols in the Catskills, at Mt. Whitney in Lake Placid, and finally at his most favorite mountain, Whiteface. In fact, upon first showing Whiteface to his future wife Patty, he referred to the mountain as his mistress. He was the Director of the Volunteer Ski Patrol for the 1980 Winter Olympics and thereafter realized his dream and became a full time employee at Whiteface for the next 23 years. He had finally found “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”.
Jim was a pharmaceutical sales representative for G.D. Searle for 20 years. He retired from the Olympic Regional Development Authority after having worked at Whiteface Mountain wearing various hats as Director of Skier Services, the Whiteface Toll Road, and Guest Services. He was also Safety Services Coordinator and Ski Patrol Director, and the man behind Whiteface Willy, the safety mascot at the mountain.
