Alice Mary "Fuzzy" Scollin

October 30, 1938 — September 7, 2024

Saranac Lake

Alice “Fuzzy” Scollin, age 85, of Saranac Lake, died on September 7, 2024, at her home, under the care of her family.

Born in Saranac Lake on October 30, 1938, Alice married the love of her life, Raymond M. Scollin, on December 21, 1956. As a young, military family, they resided in Mount Holly, NJ during Ray’s service in the United States Air Force. As soon as they could, they moved back to Saranac Lake.

Alice was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, raising four children – including “Irish triplets” born 15 months apart from each other. Her hobbies included bowling, fishing, reading, and spending time on her beloved Lower Saranac Lake. She was an engaged and selfless member of her community, overseeing for many years Santa’s Jukebox, a local Christmas charity started by her father – former Village of Saranac Lake police chief, William Wallace – in 1948. Alice was also a teacher of Catholic religious education (fourth grade) and served on both the finance committee and parish council at St. Bernard’s Church. When High Peaks Hospice was founded in Saranac Lake in 1986 by a group of concerned citizens, Alice served as the original volunteer coordinator. Almost four decades later, High Peaks Hospice was instrumental in facilitating her last wishes.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, Bill and Alice (Munn) Wallace, and brother, Billy Wallace, of Saranac Lake. She is survived by her two sisters, Barbara A. Stunzi and Sharon E. Fregoe, four children – Kathleen (Geoff) Percz of Ridge, NY, Raymond (Mary) Scollin of Saranac Lake, David (Megan) Scollin of Hahira, GA, and Lynda (Ricky) Battistoni of Milton, VT – along with 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 16, at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake, with Fr. Martin Cline officiating. A graveside service will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery. Friends wishing to remember Alice are invited to make memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or High Peaks Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
