Daniel Grant

June 7, 1944 — March 9, 2023

Daniel A. Grant, age 78, of Rainbow Lake, passed away Thursday, March 09, 2023 with his family by his side.

He was born June 7, 1944 in Troy, NY to Edward and Elsie Grant.

Dan graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1962. He then attended Nichols College in Dudley, MA where he competed on the college hockey and ski teams. He was active-duty Navy, serving in the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion #1 (Seabees MCB#1) from June 1964 to June 1966, spending 7 months in Cuba. He married his sweetheart, Karen on Christmas Day 1965 while on weekend leave from the Navy. They enjoyed a very brief honeymoon in Lake Placid. Dan was a member of the World Championship Bobsled Team, with his father, in St. Moritz, Switzerland in 1965, a member of the World Championship Bobsled Team in Cortina, Italy in 1966, and a member of the 1976 Olympic Bobsled Team in Innsbruck, Austria. He was a member of the United States Olympians and Paralympians Association.

Dan worked as a builder and land developer with his father through Grant Enterprises in Queensbury, NY from 1966 to 1981. He then worked as a Plant Engineer for Universal Medical Instrument Corp. in Malta, NY from 1981 through 1989. He finished his career as a construction manager for Richard E. Jones Associates in Queensbury, NY from 1989 to 2005.

Dan and his wife retired in 2005 and built a home in Rainbow Lake, NY where they could be close to their kids and all of the things they loved to do, including camping, boating, and fishing. Dan was an accomplished woodworker and wood turner, and played harmonica and accordion. He enjoyed several fine seasons at Mountain Arts Gathering, and looked forward to his Wednesday morning breakfasts with “the boys”.

Dan is survived by his wife Karen, his son Dustin (Christina) Grant of Lake Placid, his daughter Lori (William) Schneider of Saranac Lake, his beloved dog Angie, a brother David of Johnson, VT, a nephew, Ken whom he shared a special bond with, and some very dear camping friends. He is predeceased by his sister, Sondra.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no services. Family and friends can share their condolences and memories at fortunekeoughfuenralhome.com.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to High Peaks Hospice, and to the many amazing caregivers at Adirondack Medical Center – especially Dr. John Decker, and his wife Martha.

Those wishing to honor Dan’s memory should do so by donating to The Joshua Fund Inc, or High Peaks Hospice, and then going for a walk in the woods.
