Robert Hampson

Robert (Bob) John Hampson, age 90, of Newcomb NY passed away peacefully on April 20th 2021. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret (Snow) Hampson, his sons David (Tisha) Hampson and Craig Hampson, and his grandchildren Tyler and Ava. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Lou Hampson, and his brother, Richard Hampson.

Robert was born on April 6, 1931 and grew up in Pleasantville, NY and graduated from Pleasantville High School. He then attended the University of Maine and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in forestry. He was in ROTC so he then accepted his commission as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army where he served his country for 2 years. After the Army, he obtained his master’s degree from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and began his career as a forester, working for NL Industries at the Tahawus Mine near Newcomb NY. He left as things were winding down at the mine with the title of Lands Manager, and went into real estate, getting his broker’s license and selling real estate for many years. He continued to do forestry work as well as a consultant for landowners who were in the market to sell timber from their property. He then transitioned in real estate to a career as an appraiser for many years before retiring.

In his spare time, he kept busy with many hobbies, organizations, and volunteer work. He was an avid fly fisherman, a skill he learned from his uncle Chuck. He tied many of his own flies and enjoyed fishing in the streams and lakes of the Adirondacks. In the winter, he loved to ski, both downhill and cross country. He enjoyed singing in the Long Lake Community Chorus. He was a longtime member and past president of the Newcomb Lions Club. He was a longtime active member of Long Lake Wesleyan Church where he taught adult Sunday School for many years. He travelled to Haiti with a group of men from the church to help build houses and he also travelled to the New Orleans area soon after Hurricane Katrina with a group of men from the church. They worked with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild after the Hurricane. He and Margaret also organized an annual blood drive in Newcomb for many years.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY. At Bob’s request there will be no calling hours. A funeral service is set for Friday April 30, 2021 at 11:00am at the Long Lake Wesleyan Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s name to the Newcomb Rescue Squad in care of the Fortune-Keough funeral home.
