Carl Matthew Lewandowski age 62, of Harrietstown, N.Y. died Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Carl was born on December 13, 1956, in Batavia, N.Y. the son of Carl Robert and Dorothy Teresa (Hamera) Lewandowski. Carl married Diane K. Pettit in Cuba N.Y. on May 7, 1983. Carl earned a Bachelor degree from Buffalo State College and furthered his studies toward a Master’s Degree. During his career he worked Security at Batavia Downs Race track, was a Corrections officer for the Genesee County Sheriffs Department, and was a social studies teacher in the Oakfield-Alabamia School Districts, he also repaired and sold guns with his Uncle Edward Lewandowski of Batavia. Most recently he was employed by Sunmount DDSO in Tupper Lake as a Habilitation Specialist.

Carl is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 35 years Diane of Harrietstown, one daughter; Kimberly Lynn Lewandowski Watson (Kevin Watson of Lake Placid) and her partner Philip W. Mosher of Long Lake. He has a son; Kristopher Lloyd Lewandowski of Harrietstown, and two grandchildren; Tevin K. Watson and Tatum K. Watson of Lake Placid. He also leaves behind his two beloved dogs: Peaches and Dole and grand dogs Gibson and Cooper and grand rabbit Cici (Watson).

Carl was predeceased by his father and mother Carl and Dorothy Lewandowski along with several Aunts, Uncles, and other family members. His family dogs were Snoopy, Tiger and Pirate, Mini, Easton and Lilly. Also several rabbits: JW, Daisy, Buddy, Puddles and Dexter. Carl was a fighter to the very end with his battle against cancer. He refused to give up hope and continued till the afternoon he passed away. Carl and Diane met at Buffalo State College. Both he and Diane were members of the colleges ambulance squad, drove the ambulance as well as being an EMT. Carl was an avid sportsman in his earlier years and truly loved hunting and fishing with his friends and family members. He lived his life to the fullest in as many ways he could. He coached and was involved in little league baseball in Batavia, NY, as well as coaching his son's team several years and being an umpire for the Saranac Lake League. Carl was very passionate about restoring and collecting antique firearms, and always enjoyed target shooting with his son Kristopher. Carl also spent time in his own darkroom, restoring and reprinting photographs taken by his father Carl R. Lewandowski (recipient of two purple hearts) during his third tour during WWII as the photographer on a B-24 bomber flying missions over Folga, Italy. Carl was very proud of his Polish heritage and passed it on to both of his children to continue their own families for the next generations.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Services are private and will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in the Spring at Harrietstown cemetery.
