Years ago I had a minor car problem and was stopped in front of a house. It was a very hot day, and the occupant of the house brought me a glass of water which I was drinking when Chief Aubin and two other policemen showed up. The chief told me that I shouldn't be drinking gin while driving. I protested that it was water, but he said that he could smell alcohol.
Weeks later he saw me downtown and approached me. He told me that he had been hoping to see me, that he had been wrong, apologized to me, and explained that one of his policemen had been the person with alcohol on his breath.
I appreciated Chief Aubin's honesty and his willingness to take responsibility for his mistake. I was so impressed with his upstanding character that I have remembered his actions for more than forty years. I didn't know him other than through this one incident, but I know that he was an honorable man.
