Obituary for Julia Marie "Julie" Harvey (Hitchcock)

Julia Hitchcock Harvey (63) of Midland, Texas passed away on November 7, 2017. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 am at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity on November 9, 2017. Burial will take place at Pine Ridge cemetery in Saranac Lake, NY.

Julia (Julie) Marie Hitchcock was born on April 6th, 1954, in Minneapolis, MN to Tom and Doris Hitchcock. She grew up in St. Anthony Village and attended St. Anthony High School where she excelled in academics and had many interests, including interning in Washington, D.C. for her congressman and varsity cheerleading. During those years she spent her summers on Mission Lake and fell in love with the water, growing to become an expert sailor and water skier. To earn extra money for the summers, she also took a job at Grand View Lodge in Brainerd, Minnesota, where she first met the Harvey Family, vacationing from Texas.

Julie attended the University of Utah where she continued to do well academically and fell in love with snow skiing. She graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Studies and took a job with General Mills in Phoenix, AZ, selling cereals and baking mixes to grocery stores. In Phoenix, she reunited with Allen G. Harvey, whom she had first met at Grand View Lodge, and who was attending law school at the University of New Mexico. Allen and Julie soon married, on June 17, 1978, at the Episcopal Cathedral in Minneapolis, MN.

After law school, Julie and Allen found their way to Midland, TX, where he worked for Atlantic Richfield Company. In 1980 their first child, Jessica Hitchcock Harvey, was born, followed by her brother, Allen Grambling Harvey Jr., in 1983. Julie was the perfect mother and a strong Christian role model for her children, taking care of their every need. They both excelled in school and many extracurricular activities. Always active in the community and in fitness, Julie became a Bible Study Fellowship leader, member of P.E.O., master gardener, fitness trainer, founder of a fitness magazine, and creator of the award-winning water aerobics program for the City of Midland aquatics center that is still active today. She was also a talented and prolific baker, and it was known to all the neighborhood kids that anyone who visited the Harvey house was sure to leave with freshly baked cookies in hand.

Julie spent her summers teaching her children to sail, ski, play bridge, and enjoy the great outdoors at lake houses on both sides of the family: the Hitchcock’s on Mission Lake and the Harvey’s on Upper St. Regis Lake, New York - an Adirondack camp formerly owned by Dr. Edward L. Trudeau. After the house on Mission Lake was sold, the Adirondack camp, known as Trail’s End, quickly became her most cherished place. Julie never missed a summer at camp, where she baked especially delicious cookies, brownies, cakes, and pies - many made with hand-picked wild blueberries - to feed the extended Harvey family. Even during the most difficult times of her courageous two year battle with cancer, she made sure the family had many special moments together at the lake.

Julie will be dearly missed by her family. She is survived by her husband Allen, children Jessica and Allen Jr., sister Elizabeth Hitchcock Wallen, and her parents, Tom and Doris Hitchcock. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to all of Julie’s friends who sustained her and brought her joy throughout this ordeal, as well as all of the doctors and nurses at Adirondack Health, Allison Cancer Center, Hospice of Midland, and Visiting Angels. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Midland, Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, or Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake, NY.

Arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake, NY. A celebration of her life was held at 10:00 am at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity on November 9, 2017 in Midland, TX.

A graveside service will take place at 10:30 Am on Wednesday November 15, 2017 in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake. Family and friends can also sign the online guest book and share their memories at fortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
