Obituary for Cynthia Beiser (Beattie)

Cynthia Beiser (Beattie)
Cynthia Beattie Beiser 82, of Queensbury, NY, died on Saturday October 21, 2017, in Saranac Lake, NY at the home of her daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Buck.

Cindy’s greatest loves were her husband Chuck and Lake George. She spent part of each of 83 summers (including her first) at her family’s camp on Lake George. She was born in Ticonderoga, NY, on August 5, 1935. She graduated from Mountain Lakes High School (NJ), and was proud of her “Class of ‘54”, the smallest ever. She worked in customer relations for American Airlines after graduation. In 1958, she married Charles Edward Beiser, whom she met at Lake George, and who survives her. Raising their children in Peekskill, NY, later St. Louis County, Missouri, she sought good friends and took no guff from those who put station (or luck) over sincerity and kindness.

She was an avid genealogist and traced many branches of her family tree, which included the Van Tassels of New Amsterdam, Wilbur S Boyer, a NYC teacher and author, and Sarah Jane Killough (Beattie), a first cousin (and downstairs maid) to then Governor William McKinley.

She was the curator of Boyer and Beattie family history and our irreplaceable keeper of memories.

Cindy was an artist at heart, energetic and very creative. She had an eye for color and style which she applied wherever she went. Her creative efforts included many of her own clothes, curtains and quilts and braided and hooked wool rugs that she custom-designed for each of her children and her grandchildren. She was interested in early American history and architecture. She was a member of the Dutch Barn Preservation Society, the Peekskill Historical Society while she lived there in the 1960s, and she was an active member of the Town of Colonie Historical Society since retiring to the Troy area in 1985.

She and Chuck enjoyed renovating their “retirement” home, resurrecting a post-and-beam farmhouse in Eagle Mills (Rensselaer County) they dubbed Lily Hill that was built circa 1792. They spent 27 years putting loving care into every detail inside and out.

Cindy was always very practical and embraced a smooth transition from Lily Hill to The Glen (at Hiland Meadows in Queensbury) in 2013 when the care of Lily Hill became too much for her and Chuck. She made friends easily and enjoyed the many social activities at the Glen, especially bridge.

Cindy was preceded in death by her parents Guy and Dorothy (Boyer) Beattie, her dear “double cousins” Bruce and Jack Beattie, aunt and uncle Beatrice (Boyer) Beattie and Charles “Chick” Beattie, sister-in-law Sue (Anabel) Beattie and brother-in-law Earl Hurlbut, and nephews Craig and Brad Beattie.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Chuck Beiser, her two sons, Kenneth George (Brenda) Beiser of Philadelphia, PA, and Philip Guy (Esther) Beiser of Robertsville, Missouri; her daughter, Elizabeth Kimball (Roger) Buck of Saranac Lake, NY; and her five grandchildren, Charles, Christopher and Emily Beiser and Katrina and Phillip (PJ) Buck. Other living members of her family include her sister Barbara Beattie Hurlbut of Oregon, Barbara’s children Debbie (Steve) Bozanich, Bill Hurlbut Williams (Corine) and Vicky (Steve) Dobler, her brother Alan (Pat) Beattie of Hollywood, FL and his son Eric Beattie, her “double” cousin Douglas Beattie, several grand-nephews and many cousins (second and third, once- and twice-removed) as well as members of the extended Beiser family

The family anticipates a memorial service will be held at Bass Bay on Lake George in August of 2018.

If you wish to honor Cindy’s memory, the family suggests donations be made to the Town of Colonie Historical Society through the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home or High Peaks Hospice directly via www.highpeakshospice.org/donations.
