Irene Newell

October 23, 1935 — June 1, 2017

Irene Newell, of Liverpool, NY, passed away June 1, 2017, at Francis House of Syracuse after a courageous battle with congestive heart failure and Dementia. She was born October 23, 1935, youngest daughter of Fred and Catherine Amo Gorrow of Saranac Lake, NY. She was a seventeen year survivor of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Irene attended Saranac Lake High School, Class of 1951 where she was an outstanding student and Captain of the cheerleaders. Her academics lead her to employment at The Adirondack Daily Enterprise. On September 4, 1954 she married Russell Newell III in the picturesque Presbyterian church in Keesesmill, NY and they moved to Syracuse where Russ was working. There she found work at Memorial Hospital and later at Atlantic Refining Co. She worked three jobs to save their home while Russ was in the US Army. After his discharge she gave birth to two daughters, Kathleen and Gail.

Irene was a stay-at-home-mom and active partner in their welding field service business but church work was where her heart was. She taught Sunday school, and as a founder and charter member of Greater Love in Christ Church, served on and chaired various boards. She became a deep student of the Word of God and often preached. Her last sermon in 2012 was timely and relevant, titled “How Much is Enough?” from the book of James.

She is survived by her husband Russell P. Newell, daughter Kathleen Ann Newell (Paul Bishop) of Newfield, NY, seven grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Gorrow Amell of Greene, NY and Lillian Gorrow Burman of Saranac Lake, NY; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She is predeceased by her parents, her older brother, Arthur of Florida and a daughter, Gail Lee Dolbear.

There will be a graveside service at 2PM, Saturday, June 10, 2017, under the direction of Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, led by Rev. Scott Fischer, M.Div. at the time of interment at Harrietstown Cemetery on NY Rt. 86, four miles north of Saranac Lake, NY.
