Robert Metz

August 19, 1936 — February 26, 2018

Robert (Bob) R. Metz, surrounded by his beloved wife and daughter, passed away on February 26, 2018, at his home in Longs, South Carolina.

Bob was born on August 19, 1936, the eldest child of Richard Metz and Julia Kudorowski Metz. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his brother, Ronald.

Bob came to Saranac Lake in 1952 and even though he lived there for 60 years, he always said he wasn't born here so he was not a “local”. He loved the Adirondacks and especially Church Pond.

In his early years, he was employed at the St.. Lawrence Seaway on the Eisenhower Dam project and was very proud to have been part of this. He returned to Saranac Lake and was employed by the American Management Association and later Currier Press. In 1968, he and his wife purchased property in Lake Clear where they owned and operated Bob's Gas and Grocery, “the super store”. They enjoyed their country store and all the friends they made. In 1981, they sold this business and in 1983, Bob purchased Lake Flower Wine and Liquor in Saranac Lake.

Bob enjoyed snowmobiling (when he was a bit younger) and cruising in his 1991 Miata. He also enjoyed collecting model cars and Adirondack memorabilia.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Gail Hoyt, on October 18, 1958. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Barbara Metz Goudreau, his son-in-law, Guy Goudreau, his granddaughter, Gwen Goudreau and his grandson, Michael Goudreau. He is also survived by his step-mother Dorothy Metz of Saranac Lake, brother, Edward, and sister-in-law, Joyce, their children, Jennifer, Edward and his wife, Kim, and children, Ava and Ryan ,Craig and his wife, Shannon, and their baby girl, Melody.
