Russell Slingerland

May 22, 1926 — November 11, 2016

Russell Slingerland, 90, of Mt. Pisgah Lane, Saranac Lake, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2016.

He was born on May 22, 1926, in Fort Plain, the son of Chester Slingerland and Iva Wiles Slingerland.

Upon graduation from high school, Russ enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944, and served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot. After being honorably discharged, he returned to New York state, and worked various jobs. In 1953, he joined the New York State Police. As a trooper, he worked at various stations and assignments throughout the state. Mainly serving in Troop B in the northern part of the state, he also completed assignments to Division Headquarters and as an academy instructor. He excelled at marksmanship, and proudly served as a senior firearms Instructor for many years. In 1973, Russ retired from the New York State Police.

Not being able to put his love of law enforcement aside, Russ decided to run for the position of Justice of the Peace in 1982. He happily held the position until 2006, when he finally stepped aside and decided to retire.

Russ was a lifelong member of many fraternal organizations, to include the Free Masons and the Shriners. He dedicated countless hours to assisting children with medical disabilities by bringing them to the Shriners Hospital in Montreal. Additionally, he served as president of the Association of Former New York State Troopers for several terms, and eagerly attended meetings whenever possible later.

Russ was an avid outdoorsman, and an accomplished hunter and fisherman. His love of the outdoors was well known to all that knew him.

Russ is survived by his wife, Margaret, his son Russell Jr. (Chip) and daughter-in-law Briana, his son Karl, as well as his two grandsons: Kaleb and Jakob.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the Fortune Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A reception will be held at the Mount Pisgah Recreation Facility following his burial at the Brookside Cemetery.
