Mary "Betty" Demars Conklin

Mary “Betty” Elizabeth DeMars Conklin, age 97, of Vermontville, died Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.

Born in Troy, New York on August 05, 1918, she was the daughter of James and Mary (Conklin) Donnelly. Betty married the late Ralph DeMars on July 4, 1941, he predeceased her on April 20, 1976. She later remarried Warren Conklin in Bloomingdale May of 1981. Warren predeceased her in May of 1991.

Betty lived in New City from 1981 to 1988 and returned to Vermontville in 1988. During WWII she worked at the Waterveliet Arsenal. She later worked as a Seamstress at the Cluettes and Peabody's Shirt factory in Troy, NY and also at the Saranac Lake Dress Factory. She was a foster grandparent for many years at Sunmount in Tupper Lake and had served as a Eucharist minister at St. Paul's Church in Bloomingdale. Betty was the founder of the Town of Franklin 55 Plus Club. She especially enjoyed gardening, working with stain glass, raising livestock, cooking, baking and all family gatherings.

She is survived by two sons Jacques (Cindy) DeMars of Vermontville, NY, Brian (Dodie) DeMars of Jacksonville, FL, and one daughter Marlene (Greg) Potter of Jacksonville, FL, 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 19 great-great grandchildren, two sisters Florence Davis of Halfmoon, and Usla Abrams of Troy, one brother Charles Donnelly of Watervliet, 43 nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister Lillian Veal, and six brothers John, Bill, Jim, Bud, George and Edward Donnelly.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Thursday February 4, 2016. A funeral service will take place immediately following calling hours at 3:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will take place in St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
