Philip Lalande

Philip L. Lalande, 81, of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Saranac Lake, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Florida on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016.
He was born in Huntington, Quebec, Canada, on Sept. 30, 1934, the son of Elzear and Georgette Lalande.
Phil married the love of his life, Beverly Downs, on Sept. 12, 1959, in St. Paul’s Church in Bloomingdale. She predeceased him on March 13, 2011.
He is survived by his daughter, Tammy S. Lalande.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Phil owned and operated the Gendron Lumber Company on Dorsey Street, and that company was a prominent construction company in this region. Phil’s advertisements on the radio as the “Answer Man” had a big audience, not only for the information revealed but also for a dash of good humor. He was a tireless worker for many projects but especially the building of the Saranac Lake Civic Center. He revived the struggling Pee Wee hockey program into a large, vibrant organization and was later was president of the Pee Wee Hockey Association. At that time, it did not cost those kids a dime to join a Pee Wee Hockey team. They conducted fundraisers every year with the kids going door to door for donations. Phil played hockey in Quebec and came often to Lake Placid with Canadian hockey teams to play the Lake Placid Roamers.
He was named the 1972 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival king and was once the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year.
Their daughter, Tammy, was a fixture in the Saturday Night Ice Shows at the 1932 Olympic Arena in Lake Placid, and Phil built many of the props that were used in the shows. Tammy is now a professional figure skating coach.
Calling hours are scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 at the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
