Philip Gates

Philip A. Gates, 81 formerly of Saranac Lake and currently of Brushton, New York, died Sunday September 27, 2015 at the Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone.

He was born in Saranac Lake on December 9, 1933, the son of Doris (Barnaby) Gates and Felix Gates.

He is survived by one sister, Golda Gates Hern of Warren, Ohio, a nephew, Terry Gates of Waterbury, Vermont and several other nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother, Doris Barnaby Gates, his father, Felix Gates, one brother, Arthur Gates and eight sisters, Mary Gates Kritzer, Vina Gates Leach, Delia Gates, Dora Gates Bova, Dorothy Gates Gillette, Marguerite Gates, Louisa Gates Martin and Elizabeth Gates.

Mr. Gates enlisted and served in the U.S. Army from April 1952 to April 1955, all in Germany. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He also served one and one-half years with the New York State Guard. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0001. After returning from the Army in 1955, he worked for the New York Central Railroad out of Lake Clear, NY for two years, for Joe Taylor on rail construction, drove truck for Madden's, Whiteface Construction, Trudeau Sand and Gravel and Stone Trucking of Oklahoma. He also worked for many contractors in the area including Delux Roofing in Saranac Lake and Utica. For 16 years he worked for tree preservation on power lines spraying and cutting as a foreman.

He retired from the I.B.E.W. Local 1249, Syracuse, New York in 1996.

Mr. Gates enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and tramping in the woods, streams and remote ponds all of his life.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday September 30, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 PM on Thursday October 1, 2015 at St. Bernard’s Church with Rev. Thomas Higman officiating. Burial will follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
