Ernest Seifried, Jr.

Ernest William “Ernie” Seifried, Jr., 90, of St. Augustine, died May 12, 2015, at Community Hospice Bailey Family Center for Caring, from lung cancer and long term complications from a stroke.

He was born February 11, 1925 in Deerfield, NY to Ernest William and Mabel Brucker Seifried.

Ernie is survived by his wife Mary Agnes “Gay” Cyr, whom he married on June 22, 1946 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Port Leyden, NY. Other survivors include two brothers - Donald (Nancy) of East Port, MI and Daniel (Beverly) of Barneveld, NY; and six children: Ernest William III “Bill” (Ardie) of Watertown, NY; Randall Thomas (Ann) of Oswego, NY; Scott Marcial of Middlesex, NC; Judith Percy (Patrick) of Pflugerville, TX; Susan Maxwell (Jack) of Lynchburg, VA and Russell Jeffrey (Sheila) of Saranac Lake, NY. He had 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He entered the U.S. Army following graduation from Poland, NY High School in 1943 during World War II. He was wounded in action in Castellina, Italy in July 1944 and received the Purple Heart for his injuries which resulted in the amputation of his leg. Following discharge from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in December 1944, Ernie attended State University of New York at Oswego and graduated in January 1948 with a B.S. degree in Education. He earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration in 1950 from Saint Lawrence University.

Ernie and his wife have lived in St. Augustine since 1983 following his retirement as Superintendent of Schools for the Saranac Lake NY Central School District. During his education tenure, he also served as Audio Visual Director and taught auto mechanics and metal machine shop for 18 years. He was a member of Corpus Christie Catholic Church. He was a lifetime member of VFW, DAV and the American Association of School Administrators.

Prior to a stroke several years ago, Ernie was an avid golfer and member of St. Augustine Shores Golf Club. He also served as president of the Fairview Condominium homeowners association for many years. He loved to tinker in his workshop and even after his stroke, he continued to create small wood working projects which are treasured by his family and friends.

A funeral mass and celebration of his life will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 20, 2915 in Saranac Lake, NY at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with Rev. C.J. McAvoy officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery.
