Barbara Norman

Barbara L. Norman, age 89, of Saranac Lake, died Saturday, December 27, 2014.

Born in Webster, New York on September 21, 1925, she was the daughter of Carl and Anna (Merkel) Lotze. Barbara married Thomas C. Norman Jr. on November 26, 1949 in Webster, New York. He predeceased her November 7, 2010.

Barbara received her RN degree from the University of Rochester and worked as an operating room nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester until her marriage and relocation to Saranac Lake.

Along with raising her family, she assisted in the business of Norman Farms and continued doing some private duty nursing. Barbara participated for nearly 40 years in a Nurses’ Health Study sponsored by the Harvard Medical School along with Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She was committed to furthering knowledge of women’s health issues.

Barbara was a woman of many interests, including knitting, reading, painting, all types of crafts, and athletics, both professional and those in which her children and grandchildren participated. She was an avid bridge player throughout her life, and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and all types of games (especially when she won). In her later years, she kept in touch with her many friends and family members by email. She loved receiving pictures and skyping with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by three children: Ann N. Aumand and her husband Michael of Massena, NY; Susan Norman Benway of Jay, NY; and Thomas C. Norman, III and his wife Pam of Harrisburg, PA; eight grandchildren: Elizabeth, Emily, John, Kelsey, Kayla, Garth, Thomas C. IV, and Carly; seven great grandchildren: Eloise, Samuel, Elisha, Ethan, Hannah, Eli, and Anna and also by her loyal dog Tuki. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother John C. Lotze, and three sisters: Marion Lotze, Ramona DePoint, and Helen Baker.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. A mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday January 3, 2015 at St. Paul’s Church in Bloomingdale. Burial will take place in Brookside Cemetery in the spring.
